Carlson's Flooring

Walking into Carlson's Flooring this past week I could not wait to look at all the different flooring options they held. I was at first draw to go and look at the tiles, mainly the marbles. Since marble is a natural stone it is a great sustainable option. Most people would not think marble and immediately think sustainability. Marble is a very strong and durable stone that can be used for flooring, backsplashes, countertops, etc. With the life cycle of marble being so long, it helps reduce the effects on the environment since less product needs to be replaced and disposed of. Since it is natural, that also means its a recyclable material.

From there I went to go and look at wood flooring options, they held many different types of flooring. They carried engineered woods, hard woods, laminate, and vinyl floors. I looked closely at the hard woods options. Natural hard wood flooring is in fact sustainable since it is from a natural material. The brand I looked at contained info on the back about how they operate to stay sustainable. Viking Hardwood Flooring products are all from trees grown in a contained forest where the products can be managed to ensure a healthy life. A characteristic of these products is the saw cuts help to make any scratches and dents less noticeable to they can have a longer life. (Product pictured below) Wood floorings can also start to become a source for renewable energy, there have been tests conducted to see if foot traffic can be made into energy. The wood floor is coated on the back with silicone and nanocrystals are embedded to produce energy when the crystal is stepped on.

Lastly, I looked at thee carpet options in the store. There were many options for wool carpeting in this store and this is a great material for sustainability. Wool is yet another natural material that can be used for flooring. Wool is naturally a fire resistant material making it a safe choice in homes and commercial spaces. This product is very sustainable, and it is renewable all on its own. There is no harm done to the animal or the environment, making it a great material to use. This material is also biodegradable due to the organic content. Wool, if placed underground, will be decomposed by organisms below the ground. Wool will provide no negative affects to the environment once it is decomposed.

  3. Meaghan- Great Blog entry on flooring . I really enjoyed your perceptions from visiting Carlson's Flooring. I enjoyed the fact that you looked into Marble in detail- and included your article on Colonial Marble. You also looked into the manufacturing and harvesting methods of Viking Hardwoods company- to consider sustainability. Wool carpet is a wonderfully sustainable and fire resistant option. You also included three extra resources which I enjoyed reading. I would have like to see some information that you gathered from your textbook included in this summary. 45/50 plus 15 points extra credit for your resources.
